Which Linux Distro do you use?

Still just using Ubuntu LTS. CLI only, no GUI.

I should probably switch to something that sends fewer "metrics" back to the publisher. Oh well.

Any votes for the ceramic or the hex clad, etc? Sounds like no. Just curious and thanks for all the recommendations so far!

Next maybe I'll ask about knives. ;)

Gardening

I do a vegetable garden every summer. Basil and tomatoes, because they’re easy. Celery grows well in my plot for some reason - other people tell me it’s a pain but I plant it and it goes. Then I just pick whatever other seedlings fit my mood and space. Peppers usually do alright. Herbs like cilantro ...

Ah, Apple. STILL screwing people over on RAM and storage after all these years.

No, 8GB is not nearly enough. 16GB is the absolute floor for anything that isn't an embedded machine, and even that is starting to cause problems. That said, it does look like a decent machine overall.

There ...

My grandfather has been in the ICU for a month

Well. I'm going to borrow this thread.

My grandpa's also been in hospice for a while. He's 93, has had increasingly bad dementia for the last couple years, but his kidneys gave out last week and, frankly, if he's not dead by the end of the day tomorrow it'll be a surprise.

I drove down to Chicago ...

Probably 90+% of what I do for work is just using a web browser to access things that aren't even in the same building as me. The more that's the case, the less CPU grunt I need for day to day tasks.

I do like having a reasonably capable CPU or three around the house, however. Not that I do ...

How I got into "official" cat fostering

I’ve been fostering dogs on and off for a couple years.

I adopted a cat in December ‘21 and when i decided I wanted to give dogs a try I called up the same rescue and volunteered. Not a long or interesting story.

Anyway, good for you - it’s necessary work and cats are pretty awesome.

Never ...

FOSS IP Cam Firmware?

Snowblower got stolen.

So, OpenIPC is supposedly a FOSS firmware for IP cameras: https://openipc.org

But it's definitely a work in progress. Anybody know of a similar project that's more mature?

Otherwise my current plan is RTSP-compatible IP cameras, a firewall so they can't phone home ...

Why the hell am I holding on to this old ass Macbook?

I have a couple older laptops but I shelved my 2013 15" rMBP a couple years ago when I got a 14" M2 rMBP. Haven't used it since.

I have a Powerbook 5300, 190, and 1400 that worked when I put them in the crate. And I think about 1 1/2 Wallstreet G3s worth of parts.

I have a 2009 chiclet Macbook ...

Don't forget the phase change energy cost. Once you get ice up to 32F, you have to dump a bunch more energy into it before it turns to water.

From reading about them a bit, I had gotten the impression that heated driveways are more suited for dealing with freezing rain. So in the southern US where ...

It may need repairs though, I'd have to look.

A couple years ago I got my grandparents record collection when they moved into assisted living and cleaned out their house.

Gaming with other people usually just requires a multiplayer game and a friend who also has a switch and the same game.

Personally, I’m a Pokemon nerd, so if that appeals to you, I’d be happy to do remote battles or help you with trading stuff.

What kinds of games do you usually like playing?

I built a 320wh power bank recently. It only has two USB-C ports though.

I guess you could power a pair of MBPs from it, but it’s actually intended to power a raspberry Pi setup for an absurdly long time.

First few photos are the recent foster dogs. Seemed like chihuahuas mixes were popular this year. The Merle chihuahua was notable as being a bit of a designer breed. The black pug/chi was an absolute bastard. The sort-of-golden retriever looking dog was a super mutt (I ran his DNA for fun) but he ...
