3D printing thread

Post by Jehannum »

Let's see 'em.

I've got a Creality K2 Pro, with 2 filament switching units.

Here's some of the stuff I do with it.

What I'm working on right now are useful gauges for my 1995 Audi S6. Currently there's a 3 gauge pod in the dash that show: an analog clock, oil temperature (not working), and battery voltage (not correctly).

So I got these LED screens and made a fancy holder for 'em that spaces the screens out so that they fit in the old gauge faces:

Then I made the back part of the cluster so that it will still hold the warning lights (required for inspection here), and a blanking plate for the PRNDL indicator (for automatic cars, mine's a manual):

Instead of a fancy 3D scanner, I took the old back cover, traced an outline on paper, then threw it on my flatbed scanner and imported it to TIF, imported the TIF into Inkscape and created an SVG by tracing it. My preferred CAD package, OpenSCAD, can read SVGs as a shape, then extrude it.

I'm waiting on US Customs to clear some driver boards (ESP32s with built-in CAN comms) so that I can finish it up.

Cools stuff! I've been doing mostly cosplay stuff, and only a little for my car.

I have an Ankermake M5 which I joined the Kickstarter for. It was originally meant to be a multi color machine, but they backed out of that and it ended up just being one of the earliest high speed printers. It's actually pretty good, though they did stop supporting it or making new 3d Printers. So I've taken a risk and have ordered a Snapmaker U1, which should be here next month. We'll see how that goes.

For the Cosplay, I've made a Bo Katan suit for my wife, an Old Man Rex suit for me, and some other cool things.

The Sandman, I'm pretty happy with how this came out

Recently I made a Golden Age Flash / Mercury helmet for a friend, and I'm kinda thinking I need to make one for myself now

I've made a few other things as well, but these are what I'm most happy with. Coming up next is a full suit of armor for Sauron - that's gonna take a while even with two printers running full blast, but I hope to have it done by October

My major 3D project was posted here.

I print a lot of organizers for board games, random household items (cord organizers, electrical box inserts, etc) and props. Here's a random shot of some of the Rocketeer work I've been doing; a lot of it is pending it not being cold as hell up here in NY:

@Zapski - The paint work on the bone for Dream's helmet is A++. Very nicely done!

So, how do you get the designs for these? Are you doing them yourself? If so, what software are you using?

@ConnertheCat - Very cool R2! I wish I had a place to store something like that! And thanks for the compliment on the painting - it’s my favorite part of doing these things.

@Ukimalefu - This is the way

@Jehannum - Mostly the costumes are STLs I have downloaded, modified a little and spent most of the time sanding, smoothing, and painting. The stuff I have made are much simpler, like a mount for the CarPlay accessory that I have in my car, or this OG Star Trek Phaser which I did in Tinkercad.

Though I did do this helmet in Nomad on my iPad, starting with a STL of my DnD miniature that I made on HeroForge

*Yes I know that doing @Username doesn’t work, but I’m trying to do this on an iPad and [ quote ] was messing up for me
