"Intuit to pay $141M settlement over ‘free’ TurboTax ads"

The IRS has a File Free program (the linked article has details on how some US taxpayers would qualify).

From 2016 through 2018 Intuit had made TurboTax such that filers eligible for File Free were forced to pay to file their tax forms. Such people should get a notice then a payment from Intuit for each year they were eligible for Filre Free.

It's absolutely absurd that taxes aren't an automatic thing in the United States.

The fact that individuals have to do their own taxes, and then on top of that, have to pay for that, is blatherskite.

They should, but the tax preparation industry is large enough to have some real pull. That said, I think there is some value to people having to do their own taxes, as it forces you to at least think about them.

I'm pretty sure i'm one of those for each of those years. $30/year isn't much, but it isn't nothing. I didn't see when this was supposed to happen.

You should get a notice from Intuit about this.

Do note that not everyone who used TurboTax is eligible. Only those folks who qualified for the IRS program which allowed SOME taxpayers to file for free but were forced to pay the fee required by TurboTax during those years should get that notification.

I haven't received anything, but each year i was told i could file for free, and ended up paying and wondering why.

You are still regularly employed so I am guessing you were NOT a low-income (under $34 K) or current military taxpayer who still can file for free with the IRS.
