Robby Krieger tells the story of Light My Fire, then they play the song. The singer's not Jim Morrison (duh) but he's not bad at all. Some cool jazz horns.

Pixar Animation Studios is proud to present “Automaton.” A poetic interlude between a reality and an abstraction, this experimental short was produced by artists from Pixar’s Effects team, working in collaboration to create a startlingly original piece of filmmaking.

"Automaton" is beautiful while somewhat abstract, but something bothered me from almost the very start: why do the dust devil and the fire tornadoes rotate clockwise? While tornadoes are not unknown in the Southern Hemisphere--here is one recorded in New Zealand--MOST tornado footage is from the US and Canada where tornadoes rotate anti-clockwise. Even my linked video strikes me as being "wrong".

Maybe that video was from a Southern Hemisphere branch of Pixar?

they key word is "abstract"

is it even clear that's earth?

if you know me, you know I like to google

https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti ... direction/

It's true that tornadoes tend to revolve counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. However, according to research meteorologist Richard Rotunno of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., the opposite has also occurred. There has even been the occasional appearance of both counterclockwise and clockwise rotating tornadoes under the same thunderstorm. These deviations undercut the common misperception that the direction of a tornadoes' spin results from the Coriolis force.

Also, the spin direction of toilets is because of their construction. They're designed to make water spin, and where on Earth they are has nothing to do with it. I saw that on the discovery channel, but I don't have a link.

But even that article notes that while tornadoes are not much influenced by the Coriolis effect, they mostly are affected by the storm front which generates those tornadoes, and that those ARE largely influenced by the Coriolis effect, AND in any case clockwise Northern Hemisphere tornados are very rare though not unknown.

So much so that I was justified by my sense of "wrongness" when I first watched "Automaton". Personally I have had no experience with tornadoes except for my one with a waterspout/tornado (and that I only learned about afterward from the local news since during my actual experience the weather was too occluded for me to see its tiny funnel).

First Airbus A340 lands in Antarctica, first tourism flight there.

The flight was from Cape Town, South Africa, flying 2900 miles (4300 km) to an encampment set up by the "boutique" travel agency.
