Zooming in on Mars

Image

I hate this headline because I love the Mars helicopter, but they're not wrong, Ingenuitiy is the sideshow. The star is Perseverance

the real purpose of this Mars mission: hunting for signs of ancient life.

Right now I am getting (at least?) TWO commercials which must play before watching any YouTube video.

For now I am clicking to close any YouTube which does this. Simply not worth my time.

I use ad-blocker extensions in my browser and I never see ads, ever. Highly recommended.

yup

uBlock origin, and Privacy badger are recommended, I use both at the same time

I've heard about some browsers and/or apps that block ads on phones and tablets but I can't tell you about those

uBlock origin is not available for Safari.

I did see uki's video about penises. It ran after JUST two 15-second commercials. When I tried uki's link before, I got a short commercial (15-seconds) and then a MUCH longer one (over 6 minutes, I think). That was longer than uki's video.

Seems you're not the only one having problems blocking ads, it may be a thing with youtube+safari+big sur. No links, just read about someone else having a the same issue.

Unfortunately Ad Blocker-Safari did absolutely nothing for me. I got the same ads on YouTube.

Sad news

The steady march of time has caused Darwin’s Arch—an iconic rock formation in the Galápagos Islands—to collapse.

before:

now:

This beautiful geological feature, a natural bridge located less than a kilometer from Darwin Island in the Pacific Ocean, is now history. As The Guardian reports, the collapse occurred on Monday, May 17, leaving behind two pillars. In a tweet, Ecuador’s environment ministry said the collapse happened as a consequence of natural erosion—that dastardly, inexorable force responsible for so much of the impermanence we see in the natural world.

Space is nonmilitary by international treaty. Space Force is a stupid fiddlesticks idea that should be punted immediately.

Bees open a soda bottle

I know, because I've seen it, that bees do like sodas. Must be the sugar. But this? hard to believe, must be CG, right...?

By the way, text on the video says "teamwork is everything". At the end the woman says something like "damn bees" (not exactly but close enough. It's portuguese)

Threads of superheated gas and magnetic fields are weaving a tapestry of energy at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. A new image of this new cosmic masterpiece was made using a giant mosaic of data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa.

Martian clouds

Image

NASA’s Curiosity rover has captured images of clouds on Mars— as described in its blog post: “wispy puffs filled with ice crystals that scattered light from the setting sun, some of them shimmering with color.”

According to NASA clouds are rare in the thin atmosphere of Mars, but usually form at its equator during its coldest time of year. Scientists noticed that last year — two years ago in Earth time— there were clouds beginning to form earlier than expected, so this year they were ready.
