Apple’s WWDC 2021

Apple is expected to try to win back professional users at WWDC by leaning in with a new more powerful M2 chip and a redesigned MacBook Pro that ditches maligned features like the Touch Bar and brings back the HDMI port and MagSafe. The new M2 is rumored to have double the processor and GPU cores, and it might not even be Apple’s top-of-the-line: the company is rumored to launch a more powerful iMac and Mac Pro sometime later this year.

WWDC 2021 may bring some equally big changes to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. iPads might finally get an updated homescreen with fully customizable widgets, after years of mostly looking like a blown-up iPhone. Both operating systems are also rumored to get a new privacy menu for viewing the data apps use, notification settings that can be set around a user’s status (like if they’re driving or sleeping), and possibly a big update to iMessage and the Messages app that will make the service more of a social network.

New for iOS

iOS 15

Facetime:

Spatial audio makes people sound like "they're in the same room"

Machine Learning isolates voices from background noise, but you can turn that off.

Grid view for facetime

android and windows can join facetime calls in their browsers, you just share a link

New and improved Messages app...

There's a new collage and stack for sharing photos. It has new embeds for playlists and Apple News articles. There's a new section in Apple News called "Shared with you" that pulls from all the Apple News links sent to you in messages.

The same "Shared with You" thing is in Apple Music and Apple Photos. and more apple apps

not sure i understand that one, but I've never used messages

-Focus

Many new features for notifications, they're smarter

Focus: you can set up modes for work, personal, etc. iPhone uses on-device AI to try to pre-guess what notifications you want. It even reorganizes the homescreen.

New full screen weather maps, including air quality, precipitation, etc.

Apple maps

There's a new interactive globe. In cities, Apple is adding more details on commercial districts, buildings, etc. Elevation, road colors, custom-designed landmarks. And a new nighttime mode.

I tried apple maps once. Where I am, google maps is significantly better

Airpods

-they can work as hearing aids

"Conversation boost" to help people with "mild" hearing problems. Looks like it zooms in on voice, and there are sliders to reduce ambient noise

AirPods getting better support in Find My -- it'a s little unclear what's new here, but it does include a new proximity view. And you can get a separation alert if you forget them.

More Spatial Audio -- this fall it will come to tvOS. It will also come to M1-powered Macs.

Dolby Atmos in Apple Music -- now available.

iPad OS

Widgets on the home screen.

App library on iPad

so... what the iPhone got first...

Multitasking

There's a multitasking menu
There's a new control at the top of every app now, a little three dot that brings down the different windowing options.

Apple has basically tossed out the entire chronology-based multitasking approach and replaced it with a spatially-based system. This is basically a total reboot, and it's very welcome.

(I'm copy pasting some comments from live bloggers)

Quick Note

a quick way to get to a note from anywhere. You swipe up from the bottom right of the screen with your stylus.

Translate

Apple has a translate app? now on iPad

It can detect who is speaking and in what language without needing to tap a button. There's also system-wide translation for text.

Swift

Now you can now build apps on an iPad, no Mac needed. Duh, they use the same processor now.

Privacy

Tracking pixels in email can be blocked in the Mail app. Mail Privacy Protection.

Safari Intelligent Tracking Prevention now also hides IP addresses.

App Privacy Report. It's similar to the same feature in Android 12 -- but includes contacts too. It also shows third party domains contacted by the app.

Siri

on device speech recognition. By default, all audio processed on-device.

That means Siri will FINALLY work without an internet connection. [I don't think 100%, but it's a good start, I think)

iCloud

New way to recover your Apple Account: you can set a "recovery contact" who can't access your account, but you can call them to get a code to get into your account.

Digital Legacy program -- when you pass away, you can set a legacy contact so they can request access to your iCloud data.

iCloud+ with new features.

Private relay

Sounds like a VPN

Hide my email

creates random emails for you when you sign up for services.

iCloud+ lets you connect unlimited home security cameras without their video dinging your storage

iCloud+ price will be the same (I didn't know it was a thing with a price)

It's really bizarre how they seem to be spending a lot of time on things that I don't care about at all and then just glossing over really major stuff.

Make it so I never have to carry a wallet again, and never have to carry a driver's license, and never have to get a card to check in to a hotel, and never have to carry car keys or home keys? Tell me more!

Being able to see text within images? Thanks, but I don't even remember a time when Android didn't have that feature.

Extra clothing for memojis? Gee, thanks, I guess?

Health stuff

Buy an iPhone and an apple watch OR YOU WILL DIE!

I'm joking,

iPhone can monitor your risk of falling

Health app can explain lab results

Trends- tracks your health over time, so you see if things are getting better, or not

You can choose health data with your doctor, privately, not even apple can see it

-

Get notifications about your family's health, if they allow it, like when you're caring for parents.

and, so far, they're mostly just advertising their stuff, like 90%

not much for developers in the World Wide DEVELOPERS Conference, other than "look we have lots of customers for you!"

Apple Watch supports a new intercom feature, you can also talk to video doorbells from the watch. Can also get detection for packages.

macOS

Monterey

Image

Continuity -- the thing that lets Apple devices share little pieces of data with each other. New: Universal Control

You can use a single mouse and keyboard between a Mac and an iPad.

apparently if you set the iPad next to a Mac, your Mac cursor and keyboard just moves between the Mac and iPad. he did it with a macbook, drag and drop between devices, and then he made the same macbook control an iMac, drag and drop across the 3 devices

whoa

Airplay to Mac

video and sound, iPhone to Mac

cool

-

Shortcuts is coming to the Mac.

Okay, Automator is supported, but Shortcuts "is the future of automation" and we're in a "multi-year" transition.

hmmm...

Safari

Tab and window management. Cleaner toolbar. Tabs are more compact and they are shuffled up into the toolbar. And there are new tab groups.

-
just import everything I have on chrome, and I'll use safari, maybe, EVERYTHING

-

tabs groups looks interesting

Safari syncs live across devices, that looks cool

Safari Web extensions come to iPhone and iPad
