1000$

For 1000$ you can get:

New MacBook Air

or

iPhone 12 Pro

Yes, the laptop is much more versatile, and perhaps more powerful, but not by much, I'd think. The phone's main advantage is the camera + portability. I wonder when they'll make attaching your phone to a monitor+mouse+keyboard work just right. Samsung is still trying.

If I only had 1k, I'd get the laptop. Or, I'd want the laptop, realistically I should get the new mini and a sub 300$ android phone. And I think I'd prefer the iPhone 12 mini, because it's smaller. But I digress.

Interesting times we live in, when it comes to technology.

Funny how much you hear about Chromebooks when there are about half as many people running ChromeOS as there is running Linux. Lots of mind share but not much penetration outside schools.

I would wager that Chromebooks have drastically more penetration among people who aren't technical.

I was curious a little bit ago and went and looked over the analytics that PornHub publishes. They are likely a pretty accurate representation of web users and if memory serves, they had Linux at 2.1% and ChromeOS at about 1.7%.

Really?

I wouldn't expect that to be representative at all. I think different operating systems tend to attract different demographics.

I would expect that ChromeBooks' saturation would skew toward the really young, toward the exceptionally old, and toward educational use(monitored machines), and that Linux saturation would skew more heavily toward people for whom patching their own kernel was a big part of their weekend plans.

It's kind of like "How do you know when someone's a vegan?" "Don't worry; they'll tell you."

Well, "How do you know when someone's a Linux user?" "Don't worry; they'll tell you."

I have been using Linux for almost 9 years now. What is this "patching my kernel" thing you seem to think takes up some time?

Do you mean running my update manager once in awhile and having the occasional reboot? A procedure that takes less time than updating a Mac or Windows boxen?

Next you will be telling me I have to compile applications...

Yeah, this isn't quite like the bad old days where you had to take a machine down for a while to update it. Now it's pretty much automatic and you even get to choose when you want to reboot to load the new kernel. Incredibly painless.

Everybody faps, even the extremely prude. I think Pornhub's statistics may be accurate in this situation.

Not exactly what I had in mind. I was thinking of a chart of proportion of browsers and OSs used to view porn. They probably do have the data.

Do you think when I use my software center to install an app that it is downloading source and compiling locally??

I'd be surprised if some packages weren't, yes. Not all, and hopefully not most, but I've seen plenty of gcc commands buried in my logs.

Like I said, that does nothing to demonstrate that Pornhub's statistics are representative of the population as a whole.

As the image I posted, which comes from Pornhub's own servers(and which is from the page I linked to, which is on Pornhub and by Pornhub), says, Pornhub's user base is not representative of the population as a whole, regardless of previous claims within this discussion.

According to Pornhub's own numbers shown above from their own image on their own site, males are significantly overly represented within Pornhub's user base.
