more delays, more cost overruns

looks like they're going to blow the deadline yet again, unfortunately

How can it cost more then 10x the planned amount ? I am for science but such ridiculous pork barrel stuffing is incredible.
Possible reasons that aren't pork related:

They vastly underestimated it on purpose so they could get funding in the beginning. This is unfortunately common for military projects.

They underestimated the complexity required, had some difficult problems to solve and reengineering really is expensive.

Perhaps Congress strung out funding over a longer time period than originally planned. Some things really are less costly when done quicker with more manpower. Overhead costs for the facilities are going to be pretty much the same regardless of how many people are working an issue for example. Lengthening the job just means more of the budget goes to facilities

lots of reasons, including sheer incompetence by the manufacturer

keep in mind there were similar problems with hubble, and the only way they got it to work was through in-orbit repairs, which will be impossible with the webb, since it won't be in reach
