Now that I am back to work I will be looking to replace my aging iPhone5c.
I have been thinking about it and considering what I do with a phone the platform is irrelevant I am going to be interested in Android phones. I am willing to look at last years models that are reduced because they have been supplanted by a newer model.
For recommendations keep in mind that my number one priority is to get the best camera I can get for my money, there is no other feature that even comes close. I don't care about any fancy features: Face Rec, Fingerprint reader, fast charging, NFC, I just don't care. I want an affordable phone with a good camera, everything else a footnote. The one exception to that is I don't want a phone filled to the gills with preinstalled crap that I can't get rid of and I would prefer just plain Jane Android with no 3rd party skins or other extraneous blatherskite. I would be slightly more interested in a 6 inch phone over a 5.5 incher.
To kick things off, I have been looking at the Google Pixel 3, it is being deeply discounted right now and the camera in it gets high marks all over the place.
What does the hive mind think?

I like my iPhone 7. No idea if the camera is highly rated but it does everything I need it to do.
Huawei phones have the best camera. But iirc you can't get it with a contract in the USA. The Pro versions have all the cameras and the biggest screen

They have Lite versions and the Mate line too, but I'm suspecting you'll reject the brand out of hand so I haven't looked at which ones have the full lens set.

My wife complains about the camera on my Galaxy S7 Edge being better than the one on her iPhone XR. I can't exactly recommend my phone, since it's EOL, but Samsung does put a pretty good sensor in their devices.

Otherwise, I'd suggest a Pixel 3A. Supposedly they have the same photography chops as their bigger brother, but without the absolutely insane price.

Of course, if you like the iPhone, my wife's XR is no slouch. Neither is the 6S Plus she had, and that I now use as a Facetime device.
I'm not planning on trying this, but what about the software update problem that is so frequent with Android phones? Are there any companies aside from Google which regularly and relatively quickly issue updates? Aren't there a number of smartphones issued by other companies which rarely or even never issue updates to the current flavor of Android OS?

I get security updates. But I only got one full update and i won't get upgraded to the next version.

I just got updated to Android 9 on my Moto G6, but that is probably the limit for it.

I looked at the 1+ but it's not for me because the reviews all go like this: Great phone, good price, camera sucks.
It will be a good month or so before I pull the trigger on this but, so far, the Pixel3 is looking pretty good. Highly rated camera and pure android. At around $400 dollars give or take.

This is mostly a problem with Qualcomm dickery. They won't support their older chips beyond 2 generations/years. Even if manufacturers wanted to issue additional updates, they can't without a complete board support package. Which is one reason I hated that they more or less won over Apple. I was really hoping they would be forced to compete on something in the US.

As it is, thanks to Verizon and Sprint, practically every phone in the US has a Qualcomm part due to the CDMA patents.
wait until next summer (this autumn for flagships like pixel 4) when 5G is mainstream on handsets
The Huawei Mate 30 is supposed to come out just before the iPhone 11 Pro Plus Max watchamacallet. I expect it to have really good cameras.

But honestly, you're problably better off just sticking to the list I linked to, which says that Samsung, Huawei, and the Nexus 3 have the best cameras on the market.

I couldn't care less about 5G. I only use about 250MB of data a month. There is wifi everywhere I hang out.
