My mom is the greatest, I love helping her out.

Her MacBook is getting a question mark or an international NO sign when she starts it up. They're somewhat intermittent. Way back when, I'd boot it off an external hard drive or a system disk. Now, I think I could probably figure out how to do the same but also understand I'm fumbling around and am out of my depth these days.

Thoughts? Direction? Ideas?

Thanks friends.
Sounds like the internal hard drive failed or is very badly corrupted. Make a OS X bootable USB stick and see if you can boot off of that.

If it’s got a spinning hard disk, it’s about to die, back it up while you still can.

If it’s an SSD, boot it holding Command R and reinstall macOS.
