hackers break into major us email provider, delete ... well, everything

I have not heard of them either, so I will not classify them as major either.

Major would be Yahoo, GMail, and Hotmail.

Yeah, the fact that separate systems, with separate passwords, got nuked all at once implies some pretty intense insider knowledge.
