IIRC, Apple's Remote tech is just an apple-packed "pretty" version of VNC; it uses no small amount of bandwidth, and I'm pretty sure you'd need to do port forwarding setup, etc.

It's been a while; they might have improved upon it quite a bit since I was using it every day.

It is VNC, and you can use any regular old VNC client to connect to a Mac. I do it occasionally, and it works like you would expect, but I also have a gigabit Ethernet connection between the machines.

It's not VNC, but you can configure VNC in the same area in your system settings.
