Back to Mac

Post by Warin »

I am in the process of selling my current Windows PC. I have had it with Windows! My main reason for building it was for gaming, and since I got my Xbox Series X and a Switch, I just don’t play games on it any longer. So I have it being picked up on Saturday.

The proceeds are enough that I am going to be able to pick up a 16gb/512gb M1 MacBook Air. I seriously considered the Pro, but I really don’t care about the Touchbar and the price differential for the extra battery life just doesn’t seem worth it.

I cannot begin to express how happy I am to be ditching Windows and getting MacOS back. :)

I'm sorry Dave...

Once you go Mac, you never go back.

I did, but I started with 7.6 and went up to 10.4 or so.

Then I started building my own machines.

I used to be a Mac user, but I needed too much Windows software for school, and later, work. I still like MacOS, but it feels like every new release makes it harder and harder to use anything non-Apple. For example, I used to be able to plug in my hotspot as a USB Ethernet device in High Sierra. In Mojave? Not recognized at all. I had to use a hack to get it to recognize my Android phone as a hotspot.

Essentially you either go all-in with Apple, or it's an even shittier experience than Windows; where remarkably, most things "just work" now.

That is not consistent with my Windows experience. My previous gaming PC was easier to get macOS installed on than Windows. My current one is harder to get macOS on, because it is an AMD, but macOS has been rock solid, whereas I've had to reinstall Windows 10 twice since I got the PC last November.

I do think Windows has come a long way, but every time I start to think "ok, this works," they find ways to remind me it is still Windows.

The issue isn't with MacOS itself, but rather the continual deprecating of non-Apple interfaces and devices. As long as you are using your iPhone as a hotspot, for instance, MacOS works fine. However, if you try to tether to a non-Apple device, odds are pretty good it won't even be detected, nevermind work. WiFi works, but that isn't always a great option. The same holds true on iOS as well. Apple watch? That works pretty well. Non-Apple watch? Good luck with that.

I get that Apple wants you to only buy Apple gear, but to enforce it by making everything non-Apple work more poorly, or not at all, feels a bit heavy-handed. It's also not a hardware issue. When I was still running Mint on the Macbook Pro, it had fewer problems with third-party devices than MacOS does.

And now for the damn wait! Ordered today, and it looks like 19-24 days to get it. Which seems like a long time, since they said it should ship in 5-7 days. I guess covid really is impacting shipping times heavily.

Edit: this is really strange. This is the first time in almost 40 years that I haven’t had a computer that I can just sit down and use. 😜

I ordered a pair of prescription gucci glasses almost 2 months ago and they have been "processing" ever since. I also ordered a skin for my M1 MBA at about the same time and have the same result.

Hey, rumor has it the new MBP will have a white keyboard and bezels to match!

Haha. But I doubt it.

Colors are for low end stuff. iMacs->iBooks, or whatever they'll come. They will sure make new color laptops to match the iMacs, but I doubt they'll be "pros".

Or, the upcoming M1 Macbook Pros may match the iPhone 2 Pros, and those have black bezels. So maybe they'll have some colors, but different from the "consumer" stuff

I got my refurb store free delivery in under a week, two days earlier than promised. Delivered from Kentucky, IIRC. It pays to live in the Pacific Northwest trucking hub (Reno).

I suspect the 16gb models get shipped right from the factories overseas. Literally no one at retail here in my small city carries them as anything other than special order.

Anyone using an Air have a good recommendation for a dock of some variety? I am looking at this one because I have always had really good luck with Anker products.
