Thursday morning we are piling into the Mazda and heading off to VA, cats and dogs included.
After going back and forth on it quite a bit we are starting off bringing just the basics, pets, clothes, and computers.
This is the route we have chosen:

Image

We are planning on making this a two day trip with a stop at a hotel on the way. I am excited to get there for the start of hurricane season.

"...and computers"

I love that, really, no joke. We live in the future.

Oh, and I'm sure you have it covered, but don't forget to include food.

Excited for hurricanes? I like rain, even storms, but I'm not sure about hurricanes.

We will be moving in with my wife's mom who is developing dementia. So, basically part 2 of why I moved up to IL.
Not sure how long this will last, depends on her mom's progression. At least this go 'round we have the experience and knowledge gained while taking care of my mom.

Hey, you're close to DC now. Maybe you can attend an awesome protest!
Is your daughter still in the Navy? When I first read your OP I thought perhaps this move had something to do with her.

Yes, sorry to hear about dementia is the reason to relocate. Best wishes and good luck.

Good luck, welcome to the East Coast.
Hurricanes are no fun. While they will state that the season starts in June, I think the mid august-mid october time is when things get really dicey.

Meh, I lived in Oklahoma for 16 years. I highly doubt a hurricane will have any surprises for me.

Different hazards. Tornadoes cause immediate damage in a few minutes. Hurricanes take a bit longer, but can be just as devastating. Having seen what both can do, I have a fair amount of respect either way.

WVA is beautiful.
Climbing those mountains was the first time I wished my Mazda had a bigger engine. Third gear @ 70mph is kinda scary. But my old car.handled it perfectly. No issues. Got about 30mpg.
Just rested today. Will get my pc setup tomorrow and write more. I dislike touch kbs.

For the most part there is not much to report, Indiana and Ohio are not very scenic but once we hit WVA that changed. A seriously beautiful state and I was charmed by Charlottesville as we drove past. It looks like a city out of stories with homes climbing way up the surrounding mountains. I want to go visit for a weekend sometime.
WVA might be an economic and political train wreck but...damn if it ain't beautiful. All the deep valleys and hollers with small roads twisting up them made it feel like a land full of secret places. Very intriguing.
Driving the hilly, twisty turny highway was an experience for a flat-lander like me but in a fun way. Then once we began the long down hill out of the mountain to the coast my ears were popping like crazy. I think we went from around 3000ft to basically sea-level in 100 miles.
All in all a good trip. The motel6 we stayed at was brand new with the most comfortable motel bed I have ever slept on and a good family style restaurant sharing the parking lot for some good comfort food.
I haven't gotten out much here but so far seems like a nice area. The few people I have met have been really friendly and good humored, not like the fake friendly you get in OK.
So far, so good. :)

The mountains in WV and western VA are bigger.

Hey Par, when you get tired of the beach, you could make your way to the Smokies. It's just about a days drive from there, and you could take in the Blue Ridge Parkway.

If you ever get a chance, North Carolina has horrible politics, but it's beautiful.

A week in and I am kinda digging it here. The people continue to be nice and this part of Virginia is really pretty, lots and lots of trees which I love.
Thought I would drop some pics on you:

Looking out the back door, there is a decent little creek back there about 40 yards out.
