The only thing that is going to stop a loose neutron is mass. Sorry, but you are going to need some pretty ridiculous lead walls OR (and this is actually a consideration for real exploration in space) water. However, if you go the water route, you are going to essentially be in a submarine - because you need roughly 40 ft or more between you and the source.

True, but in the real world we have to deal with, well, reality. That said, if you had followed the thought exercise, you would have been amazed to discover just how close we are to actually being able to do something like that.
If we had the will to do the engineering, we are almost down to material science problems.
