45 YEARS AGO TODAY: On December 11, 1972, during the first moonwalk of the Apollo 17 mission, astronauts Gene Cernan and Jack Schmitt take turns posing next to the American flag, with the lunar module and moon buggy behind them. Schmitt is in the photo at the top; Cernan is below. Fun fact: Cernan salutes the flag because he’s a Navy man in addition to being an astronaut. Schmitt, on the other hand, is a civilian geologist who joined NASA as an astronaut-scientist.
