The Bad Astronomer explains why this set of pics is important to our understanding of the cosmos.


Basically there are more massive stars in what we can see in the universe than can be accounted for the number of supernovas that we have spotted. It simply could have been that we just have not recorded enough of them, but it was proposed that MAYBE some--perhaps MOST?--of these massive stars do not explode in supernovas but shift into their black hole phase through a comparatively gentler--being merely millions of times brighter than our Sun as opposed to HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS times brighter as with supernovas--explosion and collapse.

After a bunch of surveys a number of candidate stars were found and this was the first one to provide such evidence.
