TOS wrote: when you feel like taking a trip down a rabbit hole, do some googling about lunar conspiracy theories

no, not about the apollo landings being faked ... the theories that claim the moon is littered with ancient ruins, functioning alien bases, and oh yeah that it's hollow and is an artificial construct designed to keep an eye on us

because we're that important

Part of the fun is when you realize that some of those claimed structures were "found" by studying pics of the moon taken by ground-based telescopes.

A scope's resolution is direct related to its diameter (and inversely related to the wavelength of light being observed but let's ignore that for now). Let's say you own a HUGE amateur scope that has a main mirror that is 50 cm across (that could cost between $10-20K). That scope could resolve an object on the Moon's surface that is about 500 meters across. Mind you: that is basically only one pixel across, so realistically to able to distinguish different objects you should require 3-4 pixels across, so more like 2 kilometers across.

Here are lists of the largest buildings. Scroll down to "Largest Footprint" and even the very largest would be less than 2x2 pixels across if they were on the Moon.

Of course nowadays those conspiracy theorists have moved on to using pics with much better resolution like those taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and other spacecraft.

so on the Dark side of the moon, wouldn't you need a big ass flash to get a pic?

A collection of images taken from the latest press conference:

Image

The image on the left is Charon, Pluto's moon.

Scroll past the first section which is a list of past news conferences to get to pics and more.

Apparently their servers are being stressed because the longer downloads such as videos have stopped during their downloading.

There's no dark side of the Moon, matter of fact, it's all dark.

now seriously, both sides get sun, but we only ever see one "side"

satellite views of the indonesian volcano anak krakatau, before and after the december eruption that caused devastating tsunamis

Image

the eruption blew away over 6,000,000,000 cubic feet of the mountain, reducing its height by two-thirds

it was the site of the infamous krakatoa eruption of the 1800s, which caused an explosion so loud it was heard 3,000 miles away

is eclipsed by the moon.

I suspect that the shark just got so irritated by this THING interfering with its ability to hunt that it attacked as sharks do, as opposed to looking for anything to eat.

sorry, no image on this one, but more repeating fast radio bursts have been found

the frb phenomenon is incredibly fascinating and a total mystery

of course the go-to answer to every astronomical puzzle is "zomg alienz" but it doesn't make much sense in this case -- the power needed to send these bursts halfway across the universe makes that very very unlikely
