Idunno, we will still have range extenders for some time. Mazda will have a rotary RE in their first electric car.

Villarrica volcano in Chile

Yes, it's a long exposure, but just because the human eye can't see it doesn't mean all that light isn't there.

Someone needs to spray paint “Sorry about your tiny penis” on these trucks.

The Bad Astronomer on tonight's flyby of 2014 MU69 by New Horizons:

Image

By coincidence this will happen about 33 minutes into 2019 Eastern Time.

On the other hand it will be about 6 hours later before we get a confirmation of New Horizons having survived the flyby, then it will take days for any pictures and data to get transmitted to Earth.
Woohoo!

Not only did New Horizons survive the flyby but it sent back this low-res pic of 2014 MU69:

Image

Now we have wait over the next few days for New Horizons to send everything else.

Check the link to the Bad Astronomer in my previous post for a few more details.

Mr Peanut is an alien!?
ukimalefu posted:
Mr Peanut is an alien!?

Of course he is.

Let's see.

Obviously unlike how he is depicted in TV commercials on Earth, Mr. P could not be human in size and survive in Earth's gravity given his sticklike arms and legs. In Earth's gravity he could be no larger than maybe a mouse or a rat, or Mr. P's planet of origin had around 0.2 Gs on its surface, or maybe Mr. P's distant ancestors were an aquatic race in some medium possibly not water (but c'mon: it must have been very salty water).

On the other hand, the usually considered limitations of brain power for creatures the size of a large bug would not be a problem for Mr. P's people considering how their bodies are dominated by two (or MORE!) lobes of their brains. Early in their evolution Mr. P's ancient ancestors were two separate beings each with just a single brain lobe. For whatever reasons two of those creatures fused together mostly lengthwise, losing their "extra" limbs and organs vestigially to become four-limbed creatures. That was before those separate brain lobes became connected together through a large brain stem, and THEN began their massive growth to Mr. P's more familiar proportions of today.

All hail our new peanut-like overlords!

("But they are so delici--" "Hush, you!")
I think a goober-centric view of these so called entities is wrong-headed and unscientific. I question the very notion of legume-based intelligence. This is pseudo science run amok. There needs to be more data.

Cast ye not thine eyes upon such rantings of blasphemers! The TRUE believers will follow the one chunky road of spreadable goodness!

And such unbelievers shall have their skins flayed from their bodies, then have their bodies dry-roasted by cleansing fire!

“ICE-ing” has been likened by some to be an evolution of “rolling coal,” which involved owners of diesel trucks intentionally spewing excessive amounts of smoke from their vehicles’ exhausts onto nearby cars.

I cannot imagine how much of a loser you have to be to do that human waste.

no images yet, but china is about to attempt the very difficult task of landing a rover on the far side of the moon

it'll be very cool to see those images, assuming it works out
Good luck to Chinese. I hope the landing and continued communications with the lander are all succe...wait a minute: what do the Chinese know about the lunar farside that WE don't know?

You realize what this calls for?

THE NEW SPACE RACE!!!

when you feel like taking a trip down a rabbit hole, do some googling about lunar conspiracy theories

no, not about the apollo landings being faked ... the theories that claim the moon is littered with ancient ruins, functioning alien bases, and oh yeah that it's hollow and is an artificial construct designed to keep an eye on us

because we're that important
