What kind of a Luddite do you have to be to think we don't need to be developing better communication technology.
Why the assumption that what ever we started now would be obsolete when we needed it?
Look at the Internet. The foundations for that started being laid 40 years ago and we seem to be using it fine.
Objecting to this is stupid, particularly when you consider how much NASA developed tech spins off into the commercial and consumer space. Money spent by NASA is money well spent.

If you put off developing a technology because it will be obsolete by the time it's in use you'll never develop the technology.

If everyone does it, no technologies will ever be created.
Exactly what terrestrial application would this have?
line of sight laser beam communication would supplant microwave towers doing the same thing, but with vastly greater transmission rates. The advantage is no wires or fiber for the transmission. The disadvantage is it must be line of sight. So either tall towers to see over buildings and around the curve of the earth or more shorter towers. It can be made very secure. Most distant power grid switching stations and water pumping plants are connected to their central control this way. Many companies will set up a microwave link to an outlying building instead of laying the cable.

Like there's no noise on Earth? Better noise suppression would allow for greater distance between towers without reducing transmission rates. OK, so delay wouldn't be as much of an issue on our blue marble.

don't you understand, kirk? unless you can come up with specific descriptions of how kirk will personally benefit then no tax dollars should be spent on it

and if you do, hoo boy, those benefits had better be spectacular -- and the costs low

which of course is how r&d works, right? everyone always knows exactly what the outcomes will be and how they'll affect society

A. The primary use would be to handle the great increase in extraterrestrial traffic we will be seeing in the next 20 years or so.
B. You never know what spin off benefits we will also profit from.

I am really concerned that Luddite thinking from the conservative side will cause the USA to cede our historic leadership in technology. That would be taking a sledgehammer to the very foundations of our prosperity.

Apparently they think we'll be actually doing something in outer space.
Why I don't know.
Where the money will come from I don't know.
The evidence of curtailing everything space related seems to not matter one whit until you get one of the threads decrying NASA budget cuts.

you're right -- with manned exploration

unmanned exploration however continues apace, with many missions in the pipeline

this technology, if it's implemented, might just spur more missions
