Here's a picture of the underside of Curiosity on Mars. I was more surprised by how little the wheels seem to be sinking into the soil.

Definitely a neat pic.

The soil around the landing site always seems to be pretty firm, as evidenced by this photo from the Viking missions of the 70s.


I'm assuming that on top of it all they scout the landing area to ensure it's firm enough to provide good traction.
Yeah, pretty cool.

And a relief - when I saw the thread title I was worried someone had leaked Romney's browser history.
