Looks like a tremendous amount of friction over a large surface. Maybe that's made up by other efficiencies but at first look it seems a problematic design.
If you look at the left piston rod, it looks like there might be roller bearings where it contacts the sinusoidally varying cam.

The bearing's axles would have to be quite narrow given the installation. They'd disintegrate, the roller bearings would distort and the carefully shaped cam surface would be badly damaged.

They've got to be retained somehow, but in my limited experience, that has more to do with some kind of retaining cage and how the cavity they sit in is shaped.
Could be needle bearings around a central pin. That's how the bearings are set up on the clutch drum on a chainsaw. The crankshaft sticks through the clutch and drum, and the drum has a needle cage between it and the crankshaft so it can stay stationary while the engine continues to run. They are very tiny and hold up under stress for years. A pro chainsaw runs at 15,000 RPM at WOT, so the bearings are subject to some pretty insane loads.

Still, that looks like good lumber that could have been used for something else.
That's a pretty tiny tree. Hardly more than a christmas tree.
