Tell me the real engine has more than one cylinder.
Interesting technique. Where are they used?

Looks like there's two in that animation. The second one has been cut away from the action. Guess there could be two more not shown.

That design has a second cylinder on the other side, but it's not actually in production.

http://www.fairdiesel.co.uk/technical.htm

There was another company called dynacam that made a similar engine but without the opposed pistons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJSLDq7MkhQ

They're designed for marine and aviation applications, though I don't know how successful they'll be. The Americans use a similar design that uses a swashplate instead of a sinusoidal varying cam in their torpedoes, so it may have some market.

I find opposed piston designed fascinating.

Image

During the last war there were motor torpedo boats that used opposed piston engines arranged in such a way that you have 3 cylinders arranged in a delta shape driving 3 crankshafts. Super cool stuff!

Cool, the greater compression ratio possible with these designs would greatly increase efficiency. Provided of course the fuel wasn't too prohibitively expensive. Preventing knocking on high compression engines can be tough.

These are all diesel engines, so knocking isn't a real issue.

Sure it is, though diesels in general don't knock until moderately higher compression ratios than those that set off gasoline engines. The diesel fuel must spark or knock at the right compression ratio, when the pistons are nearly at the top of their travel. If the fuel fired when the pistons were only half through their travel the engine wouldn't like it. Do a Google search for all the anti-knock products available for diesels.

I guess I just don't think of early ignition in diesels as knock, but you're right. You can have ingition timing errors in diesels It's amazing how much control engineers have now over engines, adjusting timing on the fly with the scads of pressure and temperature data they get in real time.

TOS - I don't get it.

jkhaless - Yeah, engines of today are incredible. They get similar power out of a 6 cylinder that was only available in an 8 cylinder with about half again the displacement in the 60s.

Pithy - Good one ;)

I'm thinking this has to be a parody, with all the things she is doing wrong. About the only thing she is doing right is keeping her finger out of the trigger guard.

Ooh, 2014 V-Rod? I thought they didn't make V-Rods anymore. It's my favorite Harley ever.

Apart from the spelling fail, getting a tattoo that celebrates sobriety is one of those things only addicts do. So, umm, thanks for the warning lady.
