except that picard goes before Kirk.

Remember in the episode of DS9 where they went back in time to The Trouble With Tribbles and somebody asked Worf why all the Klingons look like greasy humans and Worf says something about how Klingons don't talk about that? Well that mystery gets cleared up.

Honestly, I felt that was handled better as a joke than some long drawn out convoluted explanation. It's why it was a joke, because there's no truly elegant solution. We all know because it's the makeup budget.

I'm fine with that, anything to lead a conversation down a Star Trek rathole totally diverting things to conversation in an image thread... because I'm still evil.

Oh certainly, for the audience it was better to make a joke out of it and leave some mysteries unsolved. But for the narrow, if questionable purpose of answering questions and filling in the back story I think the Enterprise episode in question was quite well done. In the same vein, there was an Enterprise episode where they dealt with the character, "Colonel Green". This was an even better episode, in my opinion, because it gave us a more detailed insight into why Green was considered such bad character in the original series while still leaving a lot open questions, creating new questions and leaving room for imagination and expansion. I also thought the episodes involving Vulcan domestic politics and religion with T'Pol's mother were very good for the same reasons.

Archer handled that much better.

Indeed.

That was still an excellent Phlox episode even if the plot line was obviously contrived.

It is. They are here to entertain me. Any entertainment gleaned by others is purely coincidental.
