Some fibers do indeed work better in one direction. Not that audio or consumer level video comes even remotely close to saturating the bandwidth on cheap fiber.

In the bad old days, directional cables actual did something... the ground shield was only connected at the source end, helping to avoid picking up any hum or interference through the shield. With digital, this is pretty much a non issue.

CD quality is as good as the human ear can hear, this has been demonstrated with several double blind studies using a variety of equipment, yet audiophiles (including Steve Jobs) are convinced that "high definition" audio is real.
