Ok, I have a question: Does it look like that to the naked eye, or is this something like the stagecoach wheels turning backward effect?

it only looks like that when the RPM of the thing matches the frame rate of the camera, so like the wheels thing

Most people didn't realize how easy it was to turn a later model Quadra 700 into a Quadra 950 - at least from a gestalt ID point of view. (you couldn't make the extra Nubus slots magically materialize). If you had a properly binned (or swapped) the 68040 that could run at 33MHz, you could replace the onboard oscillator with a 66MHz part. (Technically, you could go even higher, but you were into overclocking territory then). If you were successful, a Quadra 700 running at 33Mhz would report itself as a Quadra 950 WS.

Not that this really helped you all that much, but it was kind of cool seeing your Mac report itself as that.

Ah yes. CDC 6000's. The neat thing about those displays is that the characters were actually drawn, rather than raster scanned. As the displays aged, the character generators would get a little sloppy and the engineers would need to tweak variable capacitors and resisters to fix the shapes. On the right screen, you see some text that is brighter? That was done by drawing the same text twice. And when the system got busy, the screens might start flickering because the I/O processor in charge ("DSD") could not keep up.

Also, the main computer used 60-bit words, whereas the I/O processors used 12-bit words. Each I/O processor had a whole 4096 words of memory.

Another neat debugging feature is that DSD could read main memory of the computer, so you could watch memory change as programs were running.

On one hand, this could could hurt the unfair reputation pits have, and could get you and the dog in trouble.

On the other hand, it's a great idea, at least for halloween.
