EDIT: these are the visible (i.e, not requiring gear like a microscope) lifeforms that passed through these cubic feet over 24 hours. I had typed "in" but this was misleading because this wasn't a case of capturing everything within these cubic feet at a single moment.

The last time I pooped 56 chicken nuggets I was VERY glad to get a full flush from my trusty American Standard toilet!
I've tried to get a picture like that and was unsuccessful. The bats were all scared and flew away. How'd the photographer get that?

Perhaps with a remote?

I have the BBC Life and Earth dvd collections.
One segment features cave life.
At the end of the DVD they have a "making of".
The 2-3 member crew head down in some of these caves for weeks. They guys in the South American bat cave wore full Tyvek suits --and made the precaution of duct-taping strategic areas prone to tear.

They were up to their knees in bat guano (the top layer of which was covered in creepy crawlies). They said it was like being in hell.

They set up these awesome cable-car set ups for the cameras to track on. The footage was outstanding (as is all the footage in the series)
The brief description says that this was his third shot with a flash "waking all the bats up", so maybe it was a matter of time of the day and a lot of luck (and a shower of guano immediately afterwards).

It is picture #22 at the linked site.
Awesome thanks. One of those National Geographic images now grace my desktop.

Seamus - I've little doubt bat caves like that was one of the inspirations for the mythology known as hell.

I was not knee deep in bat guano when I attempted my shot. ;)

 That is great!!

I was thinking more along the lines of what kind of noises an elephant might make in that situation but that is still great.

I'm assuming automatic switches and crews?

I'd also like to say, those switches are lined wrong and would get me fired if I left them like that.
