I think it is more they still felt consumers were worth attempting to cajole with something resembling reason. Now they know that consumers are brain-dead consumerist morons and don't bother appealing to anything beyond emotion.

Yet, it is actually more nutritious than raw tomatoes. Cooking down the tomatoes makes the lycopene and minerals more bioavailable.

Agreed. I was just mentioning it because it's one of those ironic times when additional preparation makes a food healthier.
My preferred method is to just cook them down into a stew with a few other ingredients. Same effect without the sugar.

Except I add enough garlic, olive oil, ground beef and red wine to give most people a coronary.
