The late 19th century must have been a fascinating time to live in. We talk about a singularity as though it is still in the future, but if you consider the rate of advancement during this period, we may actually be on the tail-end of one.
Too bad they didn't know about cocaine's nasty habit of making people physically dependent.

So much kicked off at that time. Read Barbara Tuchman's "The Proud Tower". The few decades surrounding the turn of the 19th to the 20th century made the world we live in today. Industrialised warfare, industrialised politics, industrialised consumption and industrialised information.

Pedestrian tunnel under Antwerp connecting the parts of the city split by a river is remarkably boring:

Although to get to it one must use wooden escalators:

I hate inkjet printers with all my heart and soul.
Not even duct tape will fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound.

I guess I don't approve, but should I be surprised that some women are as invested in traditional gender roles as some men? (Even if it seems like they get the short end of the stick in that arrangement.)

Well its evolution...the men spend 14 hours a week hunting a giraffe, while the women spend 50 hours a day cleaning and cooking the food, building the village, raising the children, and servicing the men. The men spend the rest of the week drinking, patting themselves on the back, and declaring themselves King/Emperor/God. How else could it be?
Remember, people, to forgive is divine. In other words, it ain't human.
