The Bad Astronomer weighs in on new data from Tabby's Star.

Of note from his post is this chart:

Image

That black dashed line is from data taken from Kepler from about 4 years ago while all of the error bars are from the current event.

This does imply that there may be a large gas giant in orbit around Tabby's Star with an orbital period of about 760 days. Because Tabby's Star (an F3) is a bit larger than the Sun (a G2), such an orbital period would place this exoplanet about the same distance as Mars is from the Sun (well, assuming a nearly circular orbit). This is NOT whatever was causing those huge dips of much greater than 2% in Tabby's Star's brightness, but it is still weird in that there seems to be a triple-dip which took/is taking about 15 days to cross the face of that star, meaning that THIS periodic dimming is due to a huge object many times the size of Saturn and its rings.

The reason why there were TWO 760-day periods between the Kepler data and now is that the discovery of those intense dips happened after the first period, so before the star began to draw such interest in October 2015 (which is a pity since had that happened around March/April 2015 then observers could have watched that first period).

There is also a linked half-hour long interview with Dr. Tabitha Boyajian from this past Sunday, May 21st, though it should be noted that she and her interviewer do suffer from a bit of lag so at times they do talk over each other.

If you have an M&M Store near you, you can get those colors.

If not near you, you can order them through their online store.

happened in our backyard last summer

turns out the mother normally leaves the babes alone for long periods of time, eventually they were gone

seems to me they're insanely vulnerable, but maybe that's just me

"Capturing the Incredibly Rare Moonlit Firefall at Yosemite":

Image

There are only a couple of days during February when the geology of Yosemite Valley and the setting Sun line up just right to get the Horsetail Falls being lit by the sunset while the wall is in darkness (technically there is another time in October but most of the waterfalls in Yosemite including Horsetail almost always will be running at a trickle by the middle of the summer). The phenomenon is so brief that people can only get a pic or two before the falls is also shadowed.

And, of course, weather permitting.

What this guy did was get a suggestion from a fan who suggested that this past May 8th and 9th would be possible dates to capture a "firefall" using the setting nearly-full MOON.
