The Carrier brothers came up with the air conditioning to help solve printing problems in Brooklyn. Apparently the heat of summer made for all sorts of issues when printing newspapers.

Their invention should be credited with the population increases in Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and other cities in the south.
And Proteus brought the upright beast into the garden and chained him to a tree and the children did make sport of him.

One of the best things about working in printing is that, unlike most jobs that are running a machine, printing needs a controlled environment so practically every print shop is air-conditioned while practically no other machine jobs are.
Not even duct tape will fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound.
