I was at a client's house a number of years ago and he had a piece of black felt (the kind you can get from any fabric shop) that was 1 square meter hung on his wall with safety pins. That piece of "art" cost him over $4,000.
Form him it was art, because he believed the story the artist told him, and what that piece of art represented, and he was happy paying the price for that art.
to me, it was just $2 piece of fabric pinned to a wall.
Art is in the story, if you like the story then you may like the art.

That's like saying Jackson Pollack isn't art because it's just random dripping. Sorry if you don't think it's art, but that doesn't make it not art.

That's our dmv where you take drivers tests and get license stickers, title transfer etc
That's silly - you have to change the sign every election.
I figured it was like the "Jesse White Memorial DMV" or something, but they ran out of room for letters.

sorry, if it doesn't employ cleverness to get a point across it's just not art

Remembering the late William Peter Blatty with this.

I disagree art can, but does not have to get any point across or mean anything. It also doesn't need to be "pretty" or be hard to make, or be liked by anybody.
But that's just my opinion, because the only thing art absolutely is, is stick fiddling subjective.

What artistic tradition is the art coming from? I don't know much about the visual arts, but, Like, if you're a literary modernist, you're going out of your to use symbolism and stuff to try to convey your intended meaning. If you're a post-modernist, you write your story however you want and let the reader do with it what they will. Lots of art (not all of it) just needs some context to enable people to make sense of it.

apologies ... i was being utterly sarcastic, that definition is unbelievably wrong
as an artist i can only shake my head in pity for anyone who thinks that way

Flicking a brush around to make vomit-like projectile stains is not 'control' anymore than letting FedEx break your glass. They both are allowing randomness into the design.

This discussion reminds of the federal judge's definition of porn. "...I know it when I see it."
freaky deaky pentagon "drone swarm" exercise
it's a whole ton of drones that use distributed computing, sharing processing; they can easily adapt to losing or gaining individual drones and can decide on the best way to carry out their mission

Quick, somebody make a random chick's house fly and crank up the Beastie Boys.

You're an artist?

Long ago, I made this in, what I like to think as, a Pollock kind of way. I threw things at it until... it "spoke to me", know what I mean? Some of the things I threw at it are deliberate, some are random.
Sometimes I do that for a while, but I don't always get a result I like. And I rarely show those things to anybody.
Don't call me an artist. I wouldn't dare calling myself that. The most I'd say is, look at this thing I made.

That's about 1000x more interesting than any Jackson Pollock. But so is TV snow (which is hard to find nowadays...it's the signal from the background radiation of the Big Bang...and it does have patterns in it).

...allowing randomness...
There you go. It is an artifice, we can shorten to "art".
