Experiment with painting eyes on cows' rumps in order to save African lions:

Image

There was an observation that lions MUCH preferred to sneak up on their prey or let them wander close by before they would leap out to attack, but when impala noticed a lion before they were within the attack zone they would back away and the lions usually would go off to look for other prey.

A small preliminary test had results which followed the predicted behavior: only the cattle without the painted eyes were attacked while none with the eyes were, BUT it was a small test so it was within the possibility that pure randomness got that result. A larger test is being planned.

I seem to recall an experiment in rural India - a very long time ago, iirc - involving people wearing masks on the backs of their heads to keep tigers away.

It didn't work.

Actually, it did work (in 1986) but only for a while.

Also note the significant difference in hunting behaviors: being jungle hunters tigers will track prey for up to hours, apparently hoping that the prey would look away. Lions are much lazier.
