That's a fancy one. It divides. I remember having something very similar in my youth.

That would actually pretty cool as an educational aid or an art piece, but pretty worthless as a lamp.

A lava lamp is useless as a lamp, but I'd still like to get one some day.

I would haved settled for it as is, but after watching that load a frame at a time, I began to feel like nothing short of a hole-in-one would be acceptable.

Optical illusion:

Image

Sometimes I can maintain the illusion of the blue lines moving in concert but only after staring at one point within the image for long enough to get afterimages of the green squares (which appear to have a slightly different shade of grey than the background).

On the other hand: try as I might, I can NOT rid myself of the illusion of the blue lines moving as a square behind the green squares when they appear.

look at the lower right corner of the grey square. The illusion should vanish.

I focused on the top green square and then saw how the blue lines weren't keeping their proper orientation and the illusion went.

That works regardless of the direction (not just lower right) as long as one's focus is far enough away.

And FTFY. The blue lines are NOT moving in such a way that they would form a square if extended to complete a rectangle at ANY time.

The illusion also disappears if you scroll the image such that most of the blue lines in either the top or bottom half are cut off. Try that.
