I wonder how that flies after about 3 tonne of armament has been removed. Plenty of room for the science stuff with that big cannon taken out.

It should not happen, we've been warned. Yes, I know it's a movie. Still not comfortable with the idea.

don't be an idiot

europa is the place we're most likely to find life beyond earth ... there could be extraordinary life forms under the ice

The lander they're talking about in that article wouldn't go beneath the ice. There's so much radiation in the Jovian system that it would probably be pretty sterile anyhow.

If it doesn't go beneath the ice, how will it discover if there is life there?

Contamination need not be strictly microbial. Humans seem to spread death wherever they go. It would be perfectly human of us to kill the first extraterrestrial we meet.

A lander would likely land on or near one of the brownish areas on the surface of Europa and do an analysis of what is found there.

Thinking about this: a landing NEAR one of those brownish areas would be useful to determine the difference between a portion of Europa's surface which is relatively clean from what is apparently leaking from under its ice cap.

Well, of any Earthly life.

Being well inside the Jovian radiation zone (like Earth's Van Allen Belts) all of Europa's environment IS completely hostile to any life from the Earth (maybe except for tardigrades), but that doesn't mean that life is necessarily nonexistent there, just differently evolved.

Yeah, they really scored with that set. IIRC, the only SFX involved adding the bad guys, the remains, and the occasional space ship. The rest was actually that sky/lighting.
