the polar nations are convinced there are vast energy deposits up there, plus that global warming will open up the northwest passage to shortcut shipping to asia, so they're all trying to stake a claim

canada has been pushing hard on this too, trying to expand their precence in the north economically and militarily (it's one of the justifications for buying the f-35)

How short-sighted does one have to be to have such an attitude towards gasoline saving?

This year alone the sales of various SUVs are up by as much as 70% compared to last year. It is as if these people have no memory at...oh, wait: Americans. I'll stop now.
