apparently the gyro is in a detachable unit that's easy to remove when the time's right

If you tipped over enough that they actually touched the ground, you were probably out-of-balance enough to twist the training wheel and collapse anyway.

It was more of a psychological thing, imo.

I had them on my first bike. Yeah, they never saved me once I started down but I picked the balance bit straight away.

never used them myself, but a gyro-stabilized bike would be pretty neato

Projecting here, but my guess would be:

You already have a swing set, we don't get toys that need batteries because batteries are too expensive, and were not getting a dog because it's not allowed in the lease.
