I am puzzled they do not issue some sort of helmet to help with that. Or alternately provide shields on the equipment to prevent damage.

some neat photos there, although i'm really sure that first pic is of a wwii sub

still ... imagine seeing the grand fleet steaming for jutland in person, what a sight that would've been!

The UB III pictured in the first image were were near the end of the war, and evolved into the Type VIII of WWII.

Sometimes they'd shoot em with a deck gun, sometimes they'd shoot em with rifles, sometimes they'd tow them into land where the army could blow em up, sometimes they'd set them off with a magnetic ring mounted to a low flying wellington, etc.

I remember reading about one ship that delivered a unknown package... only to find out when they dropped it off that it contained a live german mine heading out to be dissected and studied!
