The bends only happen for air breathers. ;)
The water breather sorta equivalent is busted air bladders, assuming this particular fish has one. It probably doesn't or we would have seen something bulging from its mouth. Hence it was some sort of other illness.

The colors are different on your seagulls. The bill shape was what I noticed.
