Not much of a video, but what a great song.

If Frank Zappa had been more mystical and less snarky, he could have sounded like this.

Minnesota GOP legislator makes empassioned speech in opposition to bill which would put to a popular vote a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.

Note that same-sex marriages are already against the law in Minnesota, but if this amendment is passed in an upcoming election then this ban would be added to the state constitution. This bill passed the Minnesota House of Representatives 70 to 62.

Focus

Hocus Pocus

I love how Thijs makes faces like unless he doesn't sing/whistle this high, we won't make it to the next section, how the bassist is way too handsome (ladies who like hirsute men take notice), how the drummer plays with his left hand in the snare position (I forget what it's called, but some drummers hold the stick like that) and how Akkermann nails the solo. (I think Akkerman's the weak link of this almost-supergroup, but when he's in tune he has the technique to pull it off.)

I though my last one was pretty awesome. It seems long at first glance, but you just have to give it a couple of minutes to see how it develops. I'll wait until it gets noticed.

Male wood frogs trying to mate with a tiger salamander:

During mating season, male frogs will try to amplex anything that moves, but this is just crazy.

Before the Faces, there was a band called the Small Faces, with the same drummer, keys, and bass, but with a singer/guitarist named Steve Marriott who left to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. The band adopted two refugees from the Jeff Beck Group to replace him, who went to to become Rod Stewart and the other guitarist for the Rolling Stones.

Anyways, the Small Faces had a hit with one of the most obviously drug-oriented songs of an era that had a lot them. Besides all that, it's a pretty good pop song, and one of the first uses of flanging in popular music.

Who is Harry Nilsson?

There are plenty of great Nilsson songs, but Jump Into the Fire is a particular favorite. I stand awe of "Without You", however. I've become convinced that writing a great ballad is one of the hardest things to do in the music biz. "Without You" is one of the few.
