Nice, reprising the album that made me lose all interest in their music.
I liked them as an angry rock band, not so much as an artistic prog band.

The other kids in school that listened to U2 were kitties. They also usually listened to REM. I listened to both eventually just to see if I was right, and I was.

Call me a kitty, but I like early U2 very much.

Pre-How-To-Dismantle-An-Atomic-Bomb U2 still sounds pretty great to me.

In my mind U2 only made their first 4 albums and then mysteriously disappeared..

The only band's fans I really looked down on in high school were the Kiss fans.

To paraphrase, they wanted the best and they got a hugely overrated and undertalented marketing machine!

I never actually looked down at anyone, what I found was that if I wasn't into their music, it's others that looked down upon me. What I did instead over the years was to open myself up to listen to everybody's music and then decide for myself what I liked and what I didn't like. After about 30 years of doing that, I came back to my original likings and found them to still hold up today and elicit the most enjoyment from listening. I highly doubt anyone I knew who didn't align with my tastes actually tried to appreciate music outside of their teenage experiences. Back to U2, I found that group to be highly talented and gifted in what each of them are known for on their respective instruments. Luckily, I realized this before I got to work with Bono in the studio for a week.

U2 was a great band that covered a great number of musical styles. I really like some of their albums, while I find others tedious or just not enjoyable. For most people, saying they like U2 is to say they like U2 at a certain point in time. I know few hard core fans that liked them at all times. They were just that kind of band.

Either way, looking down on someone for not being a fan is dumb, and I believe you can safely ignore those folks.
