Started watching Ratched last night.

It tells a black story for he head nurse character from the book (and play and movie) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest .
I definitely depicts a much different world than the one depicted in the movie-- in a lot of ways--it is heavily stylized.
The colors are unreal, very vivid, and there are an number of visual effects, and where there was a sense of reality in the 1975 film (actually shot in a real mental hospital).
More of a departure are some of the scenes of very, very graphic violence, and Ratched in this series is not merely a passive aggressive control freak with subtle masochistic tendencies.
This Nurse Ratched seems even more manipulative, seeking angles and like many of the characters in the staff--dealing with just as much, if not more mental illness than the patients.

I think choosing the name of the character/series was more marketing strategy than anything.
I think choosing the name for the series and character was pure marketing

I started watching Ratched. With this cast, it may have well been just another season of American Horror Story.

That is the consensus.
I learned that after I had posted. I have never watched AHS, so didn't know anything about it.

And AHS is a fairly successful series isn't it?
Now I am really confused as to why they went with the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest tie-in when they could have just made it a season of AHS.

As I'm reading, because the screenwriter is the same for both series the similarity can't be helped. Especially with the overlap with actors.

American Horror Story already had a season called Asylum, so they didn't want to step too closely on its toes.

Ratched is also being produced by Netflix, which wants multiple seasons, so there's that, I guess.

It picks up...but it's never as good as the movie, although it is different in outcome.

Makes me think of the Planet of the Apes and Logan's Run TV series. Or for the really deep and nostalgic, the Jack Kirby 2001 comic strip.

I just saw that Sarah Paulson's in this one, too.

Finished the season of Ratched.

I like a lot of the visuals, but think the director is more of a set/window dresser than anything. The hammy acting is fine, it looks fantastic, but the story is meh.
The more I have seen of it, the less I see it having anything to do with Cuckoo's Nest.
It seems to have far less interest in anything other than lampooning mental illness.
And Proteus brought the upright beast into the garden and chained him to a tree and the children did make sport of him.

I saw promotions for that and it looked to me like Ridley Scott has gone way off the deep end of the christian parable idiom.

Take out every bit of subtlety they’ve injected into the series and replace it with a juvenile graphic sex joke, and you’re halfway there. To go all the way, make every other page a rape scene, and make sure EVERY page is either misogynistic or homophobic.

The basic story is fantastic, loved season one, they’ve done a fantastic job adapting it and imho improving it. The source comic comic is naked narcissistic torture porn. Maybe it reads as satire to some people, but it’s trying so hard to be edgy, to me it runs all the way over the line into disgusting. And I enjoy some twisted human waste if it’s well done...

You know that kid in grade school who would yell the word “penis” as loudly as possible because they liked seeing the horrified reactions? That’s who wrote the thing.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go start season 2!

Helstrom (hulu)

Starts with demons, possessions, exorcisms...

2 episodes in, I really like it.

I only started watching because it's a Marvel series and it's supposed to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Utopia (Amazon)

A conspiracy theory is hidden in a rare comic book... it involves diseases being weaponized... fitting for the times we live in... That's not a spoiler

Watched only the first episode, looks good, want to keep watching.

Still isolating so I have been binge watching 8 Out Of Ten Cats Does Countdown. (eMule, Ch4)

It's another Brit panel show/game show. Funny as fiddlesticks. I've always liked Jimmy Carr's juvenile humour. Loads of swearing and sometimes even nudity. My parents used to watch the legit version of the show but I turned them on to the 8 Out Of Ten Cats version. I think there are episodes on Youtube if anyone is interested.

Ozark (Netflix, eMule) Not bad but not great. Basically Schitt's Creek and Arrested Development (A family forced to make the best of it after re-locating to a cultural back-water and the "one man trying to keep his family together") meets Breaking Bad.

you can make a thread for it, or use spoiler tags, that way people can avoid spoilers, please be considerate

or wait at least a week?

I must admit I wasn't upset for me, as I had seen the episode before your post, but I didn't know I was going to see those things, and was thrilled to see them. Let other people have that experience, not everybody watches things the minute they come out. I didn't, I watched 2 or 3 days after.
