For real, I will bet you that he is either still alive or will come back to life.

I have a question: in the episode previous to this season's finale Jon Snow was trudging along in the snow among a group of Wildlings. They stop to look up at the top of the Wall to see Ser Alliser Thorne looking down on them before he nods to allow the gate to Castle Black in the Wall to be opened.

Why are they on the north side of the Wall?

Jon Snow and those Wildlings who escaped from Hardhome did so by ship. Why would they stop anywhere NORTH of the Wall--and presumably be subject to harrassment from the White Walkers--and not sail to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea?
DEyncourt posted:
You should be happy because at this point of the TV series practically every storyline is off the books, either because of radical plot changes--not just plot- and character-compressions required for any translation from page to screen--or it hasn't been published yet.

Just about the only plot points that remain from the books are:
1) King Tommen is on the Iron Throne,
2) Cersei is captive in the dungeons below the High Sept of King's Landing, and
3) Danerys rides Drogon from the fighting arena.
My only surprise is that THIS season did NOT end with 3.

BTW: the above are not spoilers if you've watched all of the episodes through last Sunday's.

At this point Martin must do massive re-editing of his existing books to get them aligned with the TV series including the simple excision of hundreds of pages. He may as well declare that the TV series is the only true version of "A Song of Fire and Ice" and not bother with continuing to write the books.

I did forget:
4) Samwell Tarly escorting Gilly to the south via ship in order to get his training as a Maester at the Citadel of Oldtown.

In the books Sam is reluctant to go in part due to leaving Jon Snow with one fewer ally among the Night's Watch and in part that this would place Sam near his family whose holdings are close to Oldtown, but as one of his first acts as the newly elected Commander of the Night's Watch Jon Snow ordered Sam to go with Gilly and Maester Aemon and a few members of the Night's Watch as guards (who, presumably, would make their way back to the Wall collecting criminals and others promised to the Night's Watch).

Oh, boy! Sam at Hogwarts -- I can't wait for that interesting storyline.

However, my favorite line was from Daario about GreyWorm being the toughest guy with no balls ever met.

I think the spider is far tougher. Can't fight for human waste though.

I foresee conflict arising when Greyworm disagrees with Tyrion on some matter of administration, does things his own way, and the human waste hits the fan.

Nah. She totally screwed herself. She dissed Jaime. She never valued Tyrion's accomplishments and even resented her father's direct counsel. She's always been so concerned with her own power that she became blinded to her family's needs. Her hatred of Margaery is mostly because she sees her as an enemy, and because of her jealousy she fails to see the value of her influence on her son, the realm and the city. She has tossed aside everyone she could have used and manipulated and instead made enemies and created powers that now are in conflict with her own needs and wants. She sucks as a ruler, and instead of making plans she only reacts to perceived threats. Her paranoia has done her in, and she is responsible for her own fall.

Huh. Someone made an interesting point on another board I frequent.

Only in death is one released from their oath of the night's watch.

So this means that...

Jon had to die if his story is to move in any direction other than the night's watch.

Yeah I was thinking about that. What if he's burned and reborn like Danaerys? (Is that what happened to her?) Littlefinger had that speech that made it seem like Jon has Targaryan blood.

Yes, that seems quite likely. Weren't the Nights Watch guys saying "End of Watch" when they stabbed him?

Don't confuse my bloodlust and wish to see horrible and painful death to the religious nuts as liking her.
Also, the show needs more of Margaery and that crazy Dornish girl.

Eh, now the show is going to be ahead of the books and it's the TV watchers that can act superior!
Alexander Supertramp this was uncalled for.
User avatar
My point was always that it's a TV show and it's a worthwhile discussion to talk about it as a TV show and not an endless comparison to the books. That's not interesting, it's just like playing one of those spot the differences games in Highlights magazine.
mmaverick my steady systematic decline
User avatar
I dunno. A discussion on the divergent story lines, and why one may be superior for written word, while the other better for television, can be enlightening if you're familiar with both sides of it. It's also interesting to discuss why som parts may have been cut due to GRRM being an incompetent editor when it comes to his own work.

It's just a different discussion and should be held away from a TV show discussion.
Alexander Supertramp this was uncalled for.
User avatar
True story, I think it's hard though. I don't think I've ever had a productive discussion with someone about a comparison between an adaptation and its source material. Rings, Hobbit, Harry Potter, this...whatever it is, people tend to think of them as the same entity and just end up being angry that one is different from the other.

Anyway, pretty much what you said.
bratboy so sorry I schooled you
User avatar
Yeah, comparing and contrasting books with film/TV adaptations should be a separate discussion.
