Some dudes like lesbian porn. It's not a difficult concept, but the more I read of GRRM, the more I dislike him.

Is this the first time you've heard that women like written erotica? Christ, they'll even let res write it.

I'm not sure how you would determine from the above that I am unaware that a lot of women like written porn (and it would be next-to-impossible for any reader to be unaware of the "50 Shades" phenomenon).

Perhaps you were using "Some dudes" as a non-gendered term but that isn't common. "Dudes" is usually synonymous with "men", so much so that when attempting to be more inclusive many people will say something like "Hello dudes and dudettes".

Many dudes like to watch lesbian porn. Many dudettes like to read gay erotica.

And porn == erotica. It is silly to claim any sort of difference in definitions. It is more a "-I- enjoy erotica while you indulge in porn" type of difference than anything truly usable.

(I guess I could complete the saying with "and he is consumed by smut").

I'm going to give it a chance. It's well done and Sean Bean and Mr Dinklage are always reliable. But so far everyone are just stock characters mostly uttering exposition to lay out the story. Fair enough. That has to get done. I think the sex is getting in the way. If the story becomes dominated by who's-having-sex-with-who then I'll pass like I did with Mad Men.

While sex has its role, "Song of Fire and Ice" (which is the name of the book series of which "A Game of Thrones" is the first book) is more about court intrigue, the power play going on while the existential threat of "Winter is Coming" looms over them all. Season 1 is rather faithful to book 1 with understandable compression of characters (someone has tallied the number of named characters in the so-far five books of "Song" at over 1,200) and storylines necessary for such a translation to screen.

Right now after 4 seasons for "Game of Thrones" HBO has about 2 books of material to catch up with George R.R. Martin (and I think HBO could easily make 3 to 5 seasons from them), and Martin is still working on the final two books for "Song". He said that he has the main story with the major characters plotted but there are all of those minor characters and the problem of actually writing it all....

Sex does have its place, in the books it's handled a lot better than the show, imo. The show has cheesy flashes of nudity that lends itself towards a skinemax aesthetic that takes away from the story. It has all the nuance of an explosion in a Michael Bay production.

And people are like "of course there should be nudity, it's part of the scene," but that's just like someone defending Michael Bay by going "but it's war, you gotta have explosions etc". It's just handled so cheesily. To me it's the worst part of the show. It would be like if Adventure Time ran on paid cable and the writers felt obligated to have f-bombs drop arbitrarily. "But that's how kids talk" Sure, but if you're going to do that you should be able to write it up like the dialog in Superbad, and if not, then admit it's just a gimmick.

"Game of Thrones Season 4 - History and Lore of Westeros". Note: there are 16 parts, most under 5 minutes (while the clock for part 16 says that it is about 43 minutes long, it is really only about 3 minutes with the rest of the video being the other parts). The narrator of each section is an appropriate character.

The sillier parts of "Game of Thrones". The link is to part 1 of 7, each being 10-20 minutes long. Note that some segments mention things like "Now that all of your characters survived Season 1..." so there are some spoilers for anyone who hasn’t watched all of the seasons so far, but most are interviews with or by the actors off the set. I do not recall any spoilers for the upcoming Season 5.

OK, ladies and gents, today's the day!

9 pm to those not paying attention. Just a few short hours. Enough time to stock up on the wine.

I took advantage of the free month of HBO Now on my Apple TV, so I won't have to wait on a lores copy on Couch Tuner. The new episode will be available to me anytime after 9 with dvr playability. All of the other seasons are on it, too. Watched "The Children" on Friday. If you have regular HBO, Season 4 is playing right now for those who want to catch up.

Guess I should start a new thread or request "Season 4" to be removed from this one.

I would tend to agree on the pricing, but I think that it's a service people will subscribe to 3 months out of the year rather than year round - like my parents (teachers) used to do with cable (3-4 months in the summer, videotape everything.)

That'll take some of the sting out of it. To say nothing of login sharing.

Subscribing and unsubscribing to MMOs or other online services as finances and tastes dictate actually seems to be pretty common. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes more common for narrowly-focused streaming services like this.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they sold overpriced 24 or 48-hour HBO passes.

It's expensive compared to Netflix, etc. but they are the first premium cable channel to be available without cable. That's a good thing.
