Want to run AI locally?

Jehannum wrote: Sun Mar 22, 2026 7:36 pm

The real question is why you'd want to do so.

I have pretty light use of LLMs and I'd rather be able to just run something locally rather than support the growth of the technofeudalists' wealth.

Cream cheese wontons are a regional food? Really? Can others confirm? I would have never guessed...

I've never heard of it. I think he rest of the country just does crab rangoon.

Cookware

We have a set of Henckels pots and pans that we bought through Costco when we found out our 18/10 stainless farberware from college (same as the stuff Geesie posted) didn't work on our induction stove. We have a small collection of Le Creuset (stock pots, dutch oven, and kettle), and some cast ...

Many of my decisions from 25 years ago were questionable, but I still have the cookware that I bought then.

If I had to start again, I'd do the exact same thing and get a stainless 1qt, 2qt, and 3qt saucepan + 6 qt stock pot by Farberware from the department store.

Cars

Spoken like someone who hasn’t repeatedly cut up his hands replacing the headlights.

For my car, every time I would replace my headlights, my knuckles would look like I’d lost a boxing match with a cheese grater. Replacing the bulbs with ones that were likely to last longer than the car was a ...

I absolutely loathe LED headlights.

I'm glad that although my current car is high tech, it still uses cheap incandescent, easily replaced bulbs.

I don't buy large amounts anyway because beef is bad for me and the environment. So maybe in the course of a year I'll make that, goulash, and stroganoff.

Anyway, what's a hearty meal without a decadent dessert? Peanut butter pie:

I have tried for several years to grow in my yard.
Verticilium wilt kills it all though

Resistant hybrid tomatoes will survive long enough to produce, but the fruit is small and the yield is low. Not worth the effort.

I don't think the A series processors currently can handle thunderbolt.

I've also heard it said that they can't handle more than the 8GB RAM. But I don't actually know. Any of you know?

Even though I don't do hugely tasking work on my computer, I wouldn't want something like that Macbook Neo. It's cheap upfront but how long will it be supported and useful? I always get the most expensive computer I can afford and keep it for 10+ years. I'm using a 2021 MBP M1 with 32 GB RAM. It's ...

Why the hell am I holding on to this old ass Macbook?

I have, under my desk, a PowerBook G4 and two Intel Macbook Pros. There have been weird software and connectivity situations where I've actually pulled them out and used them.

All great games, but what kind of “Best Games of The 90’s” list fails to mention the awesomeness that is SimCity 2000? :o

It's specifically Mac exclusives on that list.

I'm by no means a gamer, but I had 5 of the 7.

Don't forget the phase change energy cost. Once you get ice up to 32F, you have to dump a bunch more energy into it before it turns to water.

From reading about them a bit, I had gotten the impression that heated driveways are more suited for dealing with freezing rain. So in the southern US ...

I run. I hit a peak of 500+ miles back in 2019, but having little kids and a stressful job really hurt that in recent years. Last year I hit something like 350 miles, and I'm hoping I can break 500 again this year.

I keep trying to do weight training but a) I have genetically fucked up joints and ...

I recently cleaned up my Quadra 700 and gave it to my music director. I had kept a lot of my old Macs in the dream that someday I'd have a room with them in it and enjoy retro/vintage this and that. I finally accepted that I would not be making enough money to afford a house with that much spare ...

What music have people been listening to recently?

Thanks to this show being carried on my local classical station I've really been diving into baroque music.
For example, Biber's Mystery Sonatas are an incredible journey, using a wide variety of scordatura to set many different moods.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hobble on down to get some prunes from my fridge...

Prunes are delicious.
