Hovercrafts and wind sleds are more common for questionable ice roads. The lake in the video still has 3 feet of ice and is fine.

Rust buckets were common when I was a kid. Both car and deicing technology has improved to the point where rusty cars are a rare sight these days.

See, and I would much rather shovel to stay active. It's doing something else useful while getting exercise at the same time. That's efficiency!

Heated walkways do exist here. They are usually broken. I can't recall anyone who installed one who didn't eventually abandon the concept for one reason or another. Again, if they worked well, they'd be more common. With proper equipment, snow removal just isn't that big of a deal.

Yeah, if those solutions were practical, you'd see them everywhere. The permanent installs I've seen are broken more than half of the time. Until energy sources are all renewable and carbon free, they're also terrible for the environment.

Really hope that they can keep your grandpa as comfortable as possible. Having loved ones around us in these situations is the best most of us can hope for. Take care of yourself. You are your family's future and I'm sure your grandfather is incredibly proud of you.
