Hexley The Platypus

Way way back in the day, I tried running Darwin without the macOS GUI on top of it. It was really interesting, and I remember liking the mascot very much.

Apple would probably shy away from that now, for fear of being associated with demons.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Stepping Down, John Ternus Taking Over

I think Tim Cook has been awful, really. If there's one thing that has stuck out to me about his time at the top, it's that Apple lost a lot of what made it special. We used to eagerly anticipate the things Apple would add, and now it's like "Oh, look, three new emojis." :goth:

Windows is awful. I ...

Helium browser is what Brave should have been.

I am just so impressed with how fast and stable and Mac-native Helium has felt, and how it passes these tests:

https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/

It took A LOT of extensions to get Brave to randomize the data used for fingerprinting.

They fixed the issue for colorblind people, and all I can say is that I am impressed.

There are certain issues, like I want a vertical layout that doesn't also compress the browser and force the absence of a title bar, and I want nested tabs.

But man, this browser experiences MUCH fewer problems ...

Apple CEO Tim Cook Stepping Down, John Ternus Taking Over

Honestly, I hope it's positive, because Tim Cook has presided over a pretty big drop in quality in terms of macOS releases. With a few notable exceptions, since Steve Jobs died, the changes to macOS have more often been changes to be dreaded instead of looked forward to.

And the operating system's ...

I'm colorblind. In macOS, there are three settings for colorblindness, called "Increase contrast", "Reduce transparency", and "Differentiate without color".

Here's what Helium looks like with the macOS colorblind settings enabled:

Why didn't anyone tell me tree-style vertical tabs were so much better?

Tree-style tabs aren't quite the same as normal vertical tabs.

They let you see which tabs were opened from another page, so if you've been doing a long search that required searching through several tabs, you can then visually see which ones can safely be closed.

Since I'm colorblind and don't have the foggiest idea what most favicons actually are supposed to represent or their colors, horizontal tabs are completely unbearable for me, especially when there are many.

I originally hated the idea of vertical tabs, but they're so much better. And they show the ...

I wish that it was easier to have a Linux distro that had menus along the top edge of the screen.

And I don’t mean this "faking it" stuff by having certain apps with menus there and certain ones with menus in the windows themselves.

Apple ALWAYS screws over their low-end customers. Especially on new products.

Their goal is NOT for it to be usable. Their goal is that you buy it, spend a while with it, realize it’s too slow, and then buy another better one.
