Macbook FW Power?

Okay, so Apple says my Macbook will bus-power a device up to 7w.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1562

Apple, the product reseller (I couldn't verify the information on the manufacturer website, which worries me a little) says the ADVC 110 video converter uses 4.5w.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS561LL/A

So if the Macbook and the ADVC110 don't work with each other, but each works with other devices, what's broken?

I think I might stop by the dealer and ask if there's a way to test the Macbook out. Unfortunately, the video converter isn't mine and I probably shouldn't be "borrowing" it...

As always, any advice is appreciated. :D

Um, it needs a powered USB Hub. that's what I always used.

You used a powered USB hub with a FireWire device?

:heh: Pays to read and think before typing.

Is this the Canopus ADVC 110? if so, then are you trying to power it off of a FW port? It requires a power brick.

I just checked your link. It is the Canopus ADVC110. It requires a power adapter.

Why does it require a power adapter though?

The specs on it everywhere I looked said that on a 6-pin connection it is bus powered.

Just curious.

Some are, some aren't. It depends on the model.

If you follow the links that dv provided you will see that Apple says the port is powered.

No, I meant the capture device. Some require and adapter, some don't. My friend has the model that requires the power adapter, and mine doesn't when on a powered USB port or Firewire.

Also, is the MacBook plugged in? It probably doesn't send full power out when it's running on battery.*

*Don't quote me on this. I have no idea whatsoever as to whether this is the case or not.

All the specs I have read on this particular model say that it is bus powered. That is why I asked sturner as he has experience with this one.

If there are multiple models that would make sense but I thought the model number was part of the description.

1) The ADVC110 is bus powered and works just fine when it's plugged into the iMac.
1a) I used the same cable.
2) The Macbook is plugged in.
3) The specs page say the laptop provides 7w, the ADVC110 takes 4.5. 7>4.5.

Firewire target mode didn't work. (Macbook sees a "Macintosh" in system profiler with the iMac attached. Rebooted in Target Disk mode on the macbook and the iMac saw absolutely nothing.)

So I dropped it off at the local Apple shop on the way home. I miss my laptop already.

I had one, gave it to my father-in-law so he could digitize his VHS library. Which he hasn't. It required the power adapter.

Or more accurately, it had a power adpater and I always used it.

This one didn't even come with a power adapter.

The laptop tested out fine at the shop. I dropped the converter and the cable I was using off at the shop yesterday. I think the hard plastic cover I was using with the laptop may have had just enough lip to prevent that particular cable from seating completely. That should be verified by tonight.

So I fail miserably. Oh well, sometimes you need a second opinion.

I must need more sleep.
