We've sort of been skirting around it for a while. So here's the beer thread.

Starting with "Arrogant Bastard Ale."

Their "Ruination IPA" is pretty good too, but I've only had it once. It's Arrogant Bastard tonight.

Beautiful color, excellent flavor - strong, bitter, and fairly hoppy. And the bottle is one of the most amusing beer bottles I've ever seen.

The "questions or comments" bit is funny too.

Questions or coments? If you don't like this beer, keep it to yourself --- we don't want to hear from any sniveling yellow-beer-drinkin' wimps, 'cause this beer wasn't made for you.

The one i'm currently liking a lot is Shock Top Belgian White.

I hate the first few days after I shave my beard, I always feel like I look not a day over 11.

Had this the other night, not only is it tasty, not only is it 9.4%, but it has a picture of Thelonious Monk on the label and that makes it super cool!

Hmm...
Quote:
Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9.3%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish or 12oz 4 packs and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

VITAL STATISTICS
Style: Belgian Style Strong Dark
Color: Dark mahogany
ABV: 9.4%
Bitterness: 32 IBU's

I'll have to keep an eye out for that. Sounds good.
If you want something strong and dark, have some Maudite.

Ugh. I hate 'under construction' images. If you hadn't spent so much time making the damn 'under construction' image you could have finished the damn page.

In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one)

Maybe that's why they had the damned 'under construction' image. Damned if you do, damned if you don't at that point.
Quote:
When served young, it is very smooth, but when served after several years of storage, its flavour is reminiscent of port. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.

Hm. All right, I'll have to look for that one too.

Quote:
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.

:paranoid: WTF?

(We need a smilie with an incredulous look on his face, one eyebrow up, looking very skeptical about what he's just heard.)

Anyone here (besides BB) brew their own beer? I am tempted to try it out as I have troubles finding stuff in the stores that I like. I can't stand bitter beer, and most I seem to find is heavy on the hops. My one friend has started brewing batches in his closet, and someone was in the store Friday evening to acquire parts for a fermentation vat he was making. He got me thinking about it, and he mentioned that he prefers to let the beer ferment for up to 7months to get a more smooth, less bitter flavor.

Any good resources online for setups/getting started? Any good books? BB??

There was someone on Macaddict whose father wrote a best selling home brewing book, but I can't remember his name. I wanna say skippy, but it was at least 5 years ago. Kai has the book. If he checks in here, he can tell you the name of the book.

Magic Hat: The ODD Notion Series

This beer sucks.

It's an ale. Yeah, ok. An ale that's been contaminated by citrus and suck.

I'm not sober right now, no thanks to the Odd Ale. None at all!

I started the night with the Odd ale. About three mouthfuls in I poured the remainder down the drain. Started the disposal, watched it swirl while sipping an unpleasant Yellowtail Chardonnay.

Pay attention to that. An unpleasant chardonnay was far, far better than the Magic Hat Odd swill.

That's unfortunate: most of the Yellow Hat beer I've had has been quite good. The "Odd" ale...

Please go get yourself a case of Gonorrhea before you try this. You'll have far more fun obtaining it, the flavor will be far better, and the story you have to tell later will be far more entertaining. This is just a poor quality ale with too much citrus, not enough hopps, and nowhere near enough creativity.
I'm stuck with red wine.

Goddamn it.

Think I'll drink ale til I go blind.
I'm having Shock Top and Rising Moon tonite.

What's the $500 one?

Best. Flowchart. Ever.
My first thought was that the $500 one is Carlsberg's stab at brewing a big fancy expensive beer, but apparently that's only worth $400

The photo looks like a bottle of Sam Adams Utopias, but apparently that's only worth around $100. I had the privilege of trying a bottle of that a couple years ago, I think it was an early 2000's, back when they were 'only' achieving an ABV in the low 20's. Epic stuff.

I've been enjoying Kona's Pipeline Porter lately, very heavy in the coffee. As I get through a bottle I think it starts to taste more choclety.

Have also been enjoying some lion stout

I'm cooking a big dinner tomorrow and i'm serving green beer. I've never done that before. :D
Some of my favorites are Stone IPA, Dogfish Head 60 & 90 min., la fin du monde...
Tactical Nuclear Penguin. 64 proof beer.

This is an extremely strong beer; it should be enjoyed in small servings and with an air of aristocratic nonchalance. It is exactly the same manner you would enjoy a fine whiskey, a Frank Zappa album or a visit from a friendly yet anxious ghost.

Some alcohol watchdog groups aren't laughing. The chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, Jack Law, has blasted BrewDog's high-alcohol products as "irresponsible," especially at a time when Scotland is experiencing "severe alcohol-related problems."

Sounds as though even the sticks up the ass of "some watchdog groups" have sticks up their asses.
There is a new "Fine Wine & Ale" store that's about a 15 minute walk from my house. I am in love with the place.
15 minute walk to, 40 minute stagger back.
I've a friend that brews his own beer. They're quite good. I'll see if he has any book recommendations.
