I want to get a USB modem for work to help someone hook up to her iMac so she doesn't have to get a fax machine set up in her office.

I am looking for a USB modem like Apple used to offer as an accessory with the purchase of new desktop Macs. They only stopped offering it fairly recently, some time within the last few years.

It's true! I can't believe it. Not every place in the World has broadband available.

Well, there's this:

http://www.amazon.com/56K-USB-Modem-Win ... 942&sr=8-2

there are services like this:

She gets internet access using a LAN with a 9Mbps synchronous internet connection. This would be just for the fax. She already has a dedicated fax line and a jack.

I do want to get an Apple-branded modem.

Well I drove around for a little over four hours, and

No, no closure.

I won one from ebay and got reimbursed by the school.

It's being shipped from overseas somewhere though, so it won't be here for a few weeks.

Good on ya, mate. Delayed closure is better than no closure.
How much was it? Just curious!

You're a better person than I am - I decided somewhere along the line I wasn't going to loan my employer money if they were too dumb to be flexible about spending it.

It has nothing to do with grace.

I only loan the money if these three conditions are met:
  1. I am volunteering to make the purchase, rather than being asked.
  2. The item being purchased is being used for an idea of mine or to do something that will save me time or effort.
  3. They repay me immediately upon me placing the order, so I can deposit the check the same day I spend the money(which works well because my bank has a branch just over half a mile from here and I can deposit the check at lunch, and has another branch on the same street I take to get home). I also get rewards on my credit card for making purchases, and then I pay off my card every month, so I benefit from the purchase.

In this case, I was asked about moving the school's fax machine from the common area of the principal's office into the principal's secretary's office, because a school official thought the fax machine should be in a more secure location to receive faxes with private information. The principal's secretary didn't want it in there, and I didn't want to move it. I mentioned that if she had a modem her Mac could be set to accept faxes if it picked up before the fax machine, and that that would enable them to keep the fax machine in the same location.

This idea will mean less use of paper and more use of PDF files, which are easier to deal with than paper.

Stupid question, but did it have to be an Apple modem? Weren't there other alternatives?

I can't give you a rational reason why, but yes, it did *have to be* an Apple modem.

I was going to say: fanboy. But 'because' works too.
Also ease of maintenance.
And it's clearly easy to replace if... oh wait...

Could be worse from a support standpoint.

Just when I think everything is going well, there's always some numbskull on the PTA that donates an old printer/scanner/copier, or some teacher who buys a $50 off-brand inkjet printer for their classroom and expects 1) support, 2) the building to pay for ink.

God, I love breaking those.

At least you don't do what my mom's district has done to her. They gave her a surplus printer to take home, to use with her district-issued iBook. But they've locked OS X down to the point where non-admin users cannot add printers. And the IT staff won't install drivers for people's home printers on their district laptop.

So why did they give her the damn printer in the first place?!

That's just a lazy IT person. If somebody puts a computer on my desk, I fix it. I don't care who owns it. And people with district-issued laptops get admin logins.

Your mom has an OS X CD to boot from and change the password, right?

Yes she does. She refuses to do it. By that, I mean, she refused to let me do it. She's very afraid of technology; unless she's been specifically told she's allowed to do something on that laptop, she won't do it.

I don't fix people's personal computers at work, though. The company doesn't pay me to do that. If they want their personal machine fixed, they can pay me to do it outside work.

I spend most of my day waiting for things to break, not fixing them. I get desperate.

And the last computer I cleaned viruses off netted me a $50 gift card, so it's not exactly pro bono. :D

Why do you say that? Do you want it to die? You could kill it if you really wanted to. You have the power.
I could kill it, too, by wasting off Dan.
